Every bedroom has its own unique period features, which celebrate the hotel’s original heritage and layout. 21st Century creature comforts and child friendly amenities come as standard. These include a complimentary minibar and use of iPads in the rooms, along with free WiFi throughout the hotel. A number of interconnecting rooms provide oodles of space for growing families and a little privacy too. The Restaurant is complete with a theatre style kitchen which is guaranteed to keep little ones entertained while eagerly awaiting their meal. Guided by Head Chef Matt Downing, the team create a daily changing menu, which embraces the seasons and Matt’s passion for great food, done well. Seasonal menus focus on classic British favourites that showcase the freshest local ingredients.
The Restaurant’s imaginative children’s menu takes its cue from European dining, offering tapas-style light bites such as Panzarotti (fried-cheese triangles) and ham croquettes, alongside healthy grilled fish, crudités and fruit plates. Smaller sized portions of the à la carte menu are also tailored for little tummies. Highchairs are available and the team are happy to warm milk or baby food on request. Sunday lunch and half term dining is also free for children under 5 when accompanied by an adult.
In warmer months, little ones can frolic across the lawns of the hotel’s walled garden. Oversized lawn games, including Jenga and 4 In A Row, are the perfect way to wile away a sunny afternoon, for both children and competitive big kids alike.
Nestled in the hotel’s walled garden sits The REN Spa, the ideal haunt for parents to escape the demands of family life. The Spa is perfectly intimate with four treatment rooms, one of which is a dual room to allow couples to enjoy treatments together.
A unique-wow factor of The Magdalen Chapter is its indoor/outdoor pool. The pool flows from an indoor grotto, complete with wood-burning fire, twinkling starlights and Jacuzzi style hydro jets, into the crisp Devon open air. The pool is perfect for all weather bathing and is fully heated to an ambient 30°C. Adult accompanied children are most welcome in the pool.
Four legged, furry family members need not be left behind as the The Magdalen Chapter is pet friendly. Dogs can stay in Superior, Deluxe or Feature rooms for no extra cost. Dogs staying at The Magdalen Chapter are provided with a bed and bowls in the room, dog treats in the bar and in winter, roaring log fires to lie in front of. Spare leads and advice of great places to dog walk locally are available from reception.
Afternoon Tea is not just for grown ups! The hotel serves a Children’s Afternoon Tea complete with finger sandwiches, milkshakes and macarons. Little ones will love feasting on Afternoon Tea in the hotel library, which is stocked with a wide range of children’s books.
The Bar is the perfect grown up hang out and is open late into the evening. The Magdalen Chapter’s expert mixologists serve seasonal, delicious tipples. Think ahead and book the hotel’s babysitting service to truly unwind.
